BABY SITTER
Parents, either couples or single parents, all require time off now and then, time away from their children, to get their second wind, visit with friends, or perhaps take a course that interests them. Parents tend to find their children much more delightful when they have had some time to themselves. However, time away from home is enjoyable only when parents are secure in the knowledge that their children are in good hands.

How do parents go about providing safe services so they can enjoy that important time away from home? First of all, try to avoid feeling as if you arc hiring a substitute parent when you select a baby sitter. No matter how conscientious the sitter, she will not care for the child in precisely the same way as a parent, and it`s both unfair and unwise to expect a carbon copy parent. Once convinced that the sitter is a decent, kind individual, then it is best to allow that person to be herself (within the framework of the family`s needs and rules) and to react with her own good judgment.

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: Pick up the baby sitter on time.
STEP 2: Show the baby sitter around before you leave the house. Indicate where necessary items for the children are, where the telephone is located, where the TV is and how it works, and how to lock doors.
STEP 3: Warn the sitter if there is an expected problem with a child (for example, "Johnny always cries for 30 minutes after we leave").
STEP 4: Give the baby sitter some idea of what your children would like to do, to eat or to watch on TV as well as a list of things you do not want your children to do.
STEP 5: Reiterate any safety precautions, such as "Don`t tell anyone who calls that we are not home," and "Don`t open the door to strangers."
STEP 6: Tell the baby sitter the children`s bedtime and explain the bedtime routine (bath, brush teeth, etc.).
STEP 7: Leave a phone number where you can be reached.
STEP 8: Have something in the house for the baby sitter to eat and drink, and tell the baby sitter those items are for him or her.
STEP 9: Tell the baby sitter ahead of time that you don`t want the baby sitter to fall asleep no matter what time you get home, if this is the case.
STEP 10: Tell the baby sitter what time you will return, and return at the promised time.
STEP 11: Check in with the baby sitter at least once to make sure all is well.
STEP 12: Pay the baby sitter immediately once you return - unless you have agreed otherwise.
